116. 어떤것이 불성이냐(180도)

What is Buddha-nature? (180 degrees)                          

 

부처께서 일체중생 Buddha said all sentient beings,
유정무정 막론하고 Whether sentient or insentient,
모든것에 불성있다 Everything has Buddha-nature.

조주스님 말하기를 Master Zhaozhou said,
개는불성 없다하네 A dog has no Buddha-nature.
누구말씀 옳다하나 Whose words are correct?

만공스님 생각은요 Master Mangong's thought is,
저텃밭에 많이있네 There are many in his garden plot.
나가보니 가득하네 When I go out, it's full of them,
팔뚝만한 무우들이 Radishes as big as forearms.

조주스님 말하기를 Master Zhaozhou said,
청주에가 있을적에  When I was in Cheongju,
도포하나 만들었지  I made a coat,
그무게가 7 근이네 It weighed seven pounds.

숭산스님 그말듣고 Hearing this, Master Seung Sahn,
방망이를 내리치며 Struck his stick and said,
그때만일 내가그곳 Had I been there at that time,
있었다면 방망이로 If there was one, with a bat
한대갈겨 주었는데 I gave him a piece of paper

무슨말이 그리많아 Why so many words?
이게 7근 이면되지 Seven pounds is enough,
청주에서 만들었다 Made in Cheongju,
쓸데없는 이야기로 in an unnecessary way
시간끌일 없다하네 He said he doesn't have much time

생각놓은 사람들은 Those who have let go of thoughts,
있다없다 필요없고 Do not need "is" or "is not,"
이경계를 증득하네  They attain this state.
